The MakeHuman Files Load Save Export Subtabs

The Files tab just below the toolbar will give you access to Load, Save and Export your MakeHuman model by selecting either the Load, Save or Export subtab after clicking the Files tab. Alternatively you can gain quick access to these subtabs be left clicking the corresponding buttons in the File partition of the toolbar.

Load

After accessing the Load tab you will notice three new menu's which open around the workspace.

One the left side of the screen you will have the ability to select how your saved models are presented by clicking on the corresponding radial button.

By name will sort your saved .mhm files in alphabetical order

By Created will list your .mhm files in the order of their creation dates.

By modified will list them in order of which of your .mhm files you were last working on, the most recent being at the bottom of the list.

By size will order them by file size.

You can also filter your models based on tags you may have used when they were saved.

Along the top of the workspace is a file path menu.

This menu will display where MakeHuman is currently looking for .mhm files, you can tell MakeHuman to look for .mhm files in a specific folder by clicking the three dots (ellipsis) on the far right side of this menu and navigating to the specific folder.

On the right hand side of the workspace you will see a file chooser menu where the .mhm files you have in the selected file path will be displayed. Left click on any file in this list to open it in the MakeHuman workspace.

When models are loaded in MakeHuman the camera position you had in the workspace prior to loading is retained. In this way you can zoom in on specific areas of a model and compare them as you load in different models.

Save

The Save subtab opens two menus. One the same as the load tab which indicates the file path to the location where your files will be saved, clicking the ellipsis will, like the load tab, allow you to identify the folder where you would like the .mhm files saved.

On the left hand side of the workspace is a Metadata menu. You can use this menu to Name your file, generate a UUID, and add tags. There is also an option to reset metadata.

The .mhm file saved will not contain program objects like hair, or cloths. Thus if you are using custom objects on your model these objects will not be available on another computer unless you copy those assets across to the computer as well. There will be more about this in another post.

Export

The Export subtab opens three menus, like the Load and save subtabs it again includes a file path menu so you can navigate to where you would like to export the file.

On the left hand side of the workspace you will have a Mesh Format menu. This menu allows you to select the type of file you would like to export. Below that is a Rig Format menu and below that a Maps menu.

Mesh Format

MakeHuman can export in multiple formats which include.

Rig Format

Maps

On the right hand side of the workspace is an options menu which will change dependant on what file format is to be exported. There are two common options to Mesh formats, one being are Feet on Ground. This should be selected as the Makehuman mesh origin point is the hip area. The Scale Units is the second common option, the default in MakeHuman is decimetre, it is a good idea to change this to meters to avoid having to adjust the scale latter.
